5 Signs Your Chevy Needs a Transmission Repair

car transmission

Getting a transmission repair can be a stressful and costly experience. It will be less stressful and cost less if you catch your transmission problems early. There are lots of signs that indicate problems with your transmission, so let's take a look at them now.

1. There's a Clunking Noise

If your vehicle has started to make a clunking noise, then you need to get your transmission checked out. You also need to get it checked out if you hear humming or buzzing. These noises often accompany the clunking sound.

The clunking sound will usually occur when you try to shift gears in a manual. You may feel like the vehicle is dropping into the next gear instead of sliding smoothly into it. Continuing to drive will damage your transmission further, so it's time to get things checked out.

2. There's a Burning Smell

If you smell burning in your vehicle, then you need to pull over. It doesn't matter what you're doing. The smell of something burning is never a good sign. In the case of a transmission issue, it will be your transmission fluid overheating that's causing the smell.

Rule out other problems by looking under the hood. Is there steam or smoke around your engine? If so, then it's not a transmission issue. If your engine seems fine, then it may be your transmission or another part of your vehicle. Wait 30 minutes before driving again, then get to the dealer.

3. There's a Fluid Leak

Another problem you may have with your fluid is a leak. Transmission fluid is easy to recognize. It's red and smells sweet. When you have a leak, a puddle will form under your vehicle. The puddle may be brown instead of red, as transmission fluid can darken with time.

Make sure you get to the dealer straight away, as your transmission is a closed system. Even the smallest leak indicates an issue that you need to get repaired ASAP.

4. There's a Light Turned on

Your vehicle has plenty of warning lights such as the check engine light, brake light, alternator light, and more. If you have a transmission issue, then your check engine light may switch on.

We recommend getting an engine diagnostic when you check engine light is on, as it's hard to know what the problem is when that light has activated. An engine diagnostic, however, will tell you everything wrong in your vehicle, and it'll help the technicians figure out how they can repair it most efficiently. This will save you time, money, and stress.

5. There's a Decreased Response

If your vehicle is taking longer to respond when you try to shift gears, then there's almost certainly something wrong with your transmission. Sometimes your vehicle will refuse to switch gears completely. You'll have to get towed to the dealer, as you can't get there on your own when your gears aren't working correctly.

Have you noticed that your vehicle is having the problems outlined above? Don't worry. Come to Jennings Chevrolet, and we'll fix your Chevy right up.
